Yirra Yaakin To Perform At Shakespeare’s Globe, London

In a world first, Aboriginal actors to perform Shakespeare in the Noongar language.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company and Olympic partner Woodside are proud to announce our invitation by Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to translate Shakespeare’s sonnets into Noongar and present them on the Globe stage as part of the Cultural Olympiad Festival.

Artistic Director Kyle J Morrison, along with fellow actors Kylie Farmer [Kaarljilba Kaardn] and Trevor Ryan will represent Australia and the Noongar nation, performing Shakespeare’s sonnets that reflect on country and belonging – recurrent themes in Aboriginal country.

“The Cultural Olympiad Festival is running in conjunction with the Olympics and brings together all the major arts organisations in the UK. It will run in the lead up to and during the 2012 London Olympics. “ Mr. Morrison said.

Aboriginal Australian actor, writer and director, Kylie Farmer [Kaarljilba Kaardn] has been given the task of translating Shakespeare’s Sonnets into the Noongar language.

“Kylie Farmer has been entrusted with a lot of language and cultural knowledge, with a strong understanding of classic texts, the Noongar language and poetry,” replied Mr Morrison in response to his decision on finding the right person to translate the sonnets.

“She has been able to translate the sonnets into a very poetic fashion. It’s very unique and I don’t think there’s too many people who would be able to create these sonnets on the pentameter with as much beauty and clarity as Kylie.”

“In their essence the sonnets are about love and longing. In our context they could be longing for equality, freedom and the spirit of the country. The Globe wanted to have input from one of the oldest languages in the world and we feel we offer them something that is really significant and unique.” Mr. Morrison said. “It will be the first time an Australian Aboriginal language is performed on the historic globe stage, the first time any of Shakespeare’s work has been translated into Noongar and it will be the first time Aboriginal actors will perform on the Globe stage. Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company is proud to be representing Australia at this prestigious international event.”

Shakespeare’s Sonnets at the Globe is the launch event of what will be a very exciting season for Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company in 2012.
