Synopsis
Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company presents the World Premiere of Operation Boomerang, written by Western Australian writer and actor Bruce Denny,
Cultural and spiritual needs versus societal expectations drive this work, as a kooky indigenous family try to support their sassy matriarch’s sunset wishes. A stellar cast, led by Dr Lynette Narkle as Nana, creates a fantastic night of uplifting theatre.
Operation Boomerang is a dark family comedy that looks at some of the hard questions we need to face in our twilight years. It’s a family yarn about coming together despite all their differences to support their ageing matriarch. A play not just about living on your own terms – but dying on your own terms.
Developed from the playwright’s personal experience placing his mother and other elderly relatives into aged care, the importance for many Aboriginal people to return to Country when they know their time is near, became a driving force behind writing this witty, sensitive and at times laugh out loud play.
Operation Boomerang is not only a powerful piece about choice, returning to Country for the final stages of one’s life; it is also the story of a tightknit, loving family.
