Yirra Yaarnz Writers' Group

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company is committed to sharing stories with our community, created by our community, through theatre.

Looking ahead
New stories, new voices

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company creates opportunities for the next generation of storytellers.

Our Yirra Yaarnz Writers’ Group continues to nurture emerging Aboriginal playwrights through workshops, dramaturgy and professional development. In 2026, we’re committed to growing a strong, diverse pool of local talent and supporting them in crafting compelling, high-quality new works for the stage.

We aim to:
• Expand the pool of local Aboriginal playwrights.
• Enhance professional writing skills through mentoring and targeted development in playwriting.

Through storytelling, moved readings and community discussions, Yirra Yaakin will continue to uplift new voices and build meaningful connections between artists and audiences.

“Through yirra yaakin, i’ve gained confidence in my writing, found community, courage and a renewed sense of purpose. it reminded me that stories can be medicine and that sharing our truths can be a powerful act of connection.” Kalarni Murray (Anaiwan, Barkindji), 2025
