Synopsis

Synopsis

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company and Western Australian Museum present Boodjar Kaatijin written by Ian Wilkes.

Join Koorlbardi (Magpie), Weitj (Emu), Nyingarn (Echidna) and their koordahs (friends) as they take you on a wild adventure into traditional legends of how the land was created.

Through a collection of four stories based on Noongar knowledge and storytelling, audiences will learn about The First Sunrise; The Creation of Kings Park and How the Kangaroo Got It’s Colour; How the Echidna Got Its Spikes; and The Creation of Wave Rock and the Stars.

The Production is aimed squarely at engaging with and enriching the learning of the children of WA. Arts Hub Review, 2016

Boodjar Kaatijin is the third installment of the successful Kaatijin series of new works created for younger audiences. Boodjar Kaatijin incorporates puppetry and masks with storytelling to share Noongar understanding of the Earth and country.

Engaging performance, actors had excellent rapport with children…stories kept children engaged. – Teacher, Lockridge Primary School

This new work is based on the creation stories in and around the Perth metropolitan area. By sharing stories from our local region, we hope to give students a glimpse into the cultural significance of the places in which we live.

This production continues Yirra Yaakin’s involvement in connecting the very young with important cultural knowledge and stories about our region. Sharing important messages of caring for country, environmental sustainability and cultural awareness.

It was an amazing experience for the students and tied in directly with the curriculum. – Teacher, Subiaco Primary School
