About the Program

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company has a proud history of developing the unique talents and original voices of Aboriginal playwrights from WA.

Established in 2011, Yirra Yaarnz Writer’s Group is an intensive playwriting program that guides emerging and established Aboriginal artists to turn their ideas into original new scripts.

Mentored by award-winning playwrights Polly Low and Hellie Turner, this successful program demonstrates the importance of storytelling as it relates to Aboriginal culture.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company is where the seeds of new stories are germinated. Recent main stage productions such as Operation Boomerang (2024) and Thirst (2025) came through the Yirra Yaarnz Writer’s Group program.

Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company thanks our partners and donors who ensure that Yirra Yaarnz Writers’ Group remains fully subsidised for participants. Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company will support travel and accommodation for regional and remote participants during the weekend intensive.
