Yirra Yaakin Wins Best Production At The 2015 Performing Arts WA Awards

Yirra Yaakin took home the top prize of Best Production at last night’s 2015 Performing Arts WA Awards for King Hit. Dominating the awards with nominations in seven categories including Best Design (India Mehta), Best Direction (Kyle Morrison), Best Actor (Male – Clarence Ryan) and Best Supporting Actor (Male – Benj D’Addario)). Clarence Ryan was awarded Best Newcomer and Karla Hart was awarded Best Supporting Actor (Female) for their roles in King Hit.

Artistic Director of Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company Kyle Morrison said the win would not have been possible without the support of playwright David Milroy and late playwright Geoff Narkle’s family.

“Thank you to the Narkle family and David Milroy for sharing such an important story about Geoffrey and the life of Noongar families in WA in the ’50s and ’60s,” said Mr. Morrison.

“Congratulations to all the cast, crew and Yirra Yaakin staff who worked very hard on King Hit. 2014 was a big year in theatre in WA and it shows in the calibre of all the winners and nominees.”

The awards ceremony was held at the De Parel Spiegeltent in the Perth Cultural Centre. Formerly the Equity Guild Awards, the awards honour outstanding achievement and excellence by Western Australian professional theatre artists.
