Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company Turns 21 in 2014
After a successful year of co-productions, winning state and national awards and extensive touring, Yirra Yaakin is set to further consolidate its position as one of Australia’s leading Indigenous Cultural Organisations. With an extraordinary year planned for 2014, we will celebrate 21 years of sharing Aboriginal stories.
The New Year kicks off with our 21st Birthday party at the Perth International Arts Festival’s Chevron Festival Gardens, hosted in the grounds of the Western Australian Museum on Wednesday 12 February 2014. This exclusive event titled, Ialaru, which translates to “A Celebration”, will be an evening of live music, dance and song, from the traditional through to the contemporary, with a focus on the major works and achievements of the company over the past 21 years. Special guests include Ernie Dingo, Richard Walley & the Middar Dancers, David Milroy (and the Wilarra band), Derek Nannup, Kelton Pell, Kyle J Morrison, Miranda Tapsell, Kylie Farmer, MC Optamus and Downsyde with performances from hit shows such as Waltzing the Wilarra, Alice, Windmill Baby and Good Lovin’.
The 21st Birthday Activities in 2014 also include:
- A Pilbara Tour,
- A Goldfields Tour,
- Creative development on a major new music theatre work by David Milroy,
- A publication of the 21-year history of Yirra Yaakin, and
- A program of events at the Western Australian Museum, including special performances, an exhibition and film screenings.
The 2014 21st Birthday program was announced at Yirra Yaakin’s end-of-year function held at the Western Australian Museum on Thursday 28 November 2013.
