Yirra Yaakin Finds A New Home
Yirra Yaakin finds a new home at Perth Theatre Trust venue
One of Australia’s most significant Aboriginal theatre companies will get a new home at the Subiaco Arts Centre next year.
Perth Theatre Trust A/General Manager Rudi Gracias said Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company would become the second resident company at the Perth Theatre Trust venue, alongside Barking Gecko Theatre Company.
“This is a great move for Subiaco Arts Centre which will now be home to two leading national performing arts companies,” he said.
“To have Barking Gecko and Yirra Yaakin co-located will undoubtedly generate wider audiences to this multi-purpose metropolitan venue.”
Mr Gracias said Yirra Yaakin would move to Subiaco Arts Centre in February 2015.
Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company Artistic Director Kyle Morrison said the company was looking forward to be moving back to Subiaco.
“Yirra Yaakin has a long history with the Subiaco Arts Centre,” Mr Morrison said.
“It was our first home when we formed in 1993 and some of our most successful productions premiered at the venue. The move is the right fit for the company and we are very excited to be going back to where it all began.
