Tour Dates

Yirra Yaakin Theatre and the Insurance Commission of Western Australia have once again joined forces to present MUTTACAR SORRY BUSINESS a unique performance and workshop package tackling the high incidence of road trauma amongst Indigenous communities. This year we are touring the Pilbara. This project addresses key elements such as alcohol, risk taking behaviours and overcrowding, which combined with specific social issues, create a tragically high level of road trauma amongst Indigenous populations.

The project involves Aboriginal people in all stages of the creative and administrative process. The play is designed to tour to any venue with a set constructed in less than 20 minutes. Yirra Yaakin calls this KUTTA KUTTA, Aboriginal issue based theatre, where the message becomes the strength of the play, rather than a focus on props, setting and costumes. Our actors engage the imagination of our audience and our stories speak to our people.

It’s been more than 30 years since the body of Mi’qmak activist Annie Mae Pictou Aquash was found on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. It’s still not known if she was killed by the FBI or American Indian Movement. But this play looks beyond her suspicious death – it celebrates the life of a woman in a man’s movement, a Canadian in America and an Aboriginal in a white society.

IN THE NYITTING TIME

The latest in a line of quality family oriented shows from Yirra Yaakin.

  • Written by Derek Nannup and Sam Cook from an original character created by David Milroy
  • Directed by Derek Nannup

[translates to "In the cold time" and is the traditional way Noongars used to start their stories – as opposed to "Once upon a time".]

In the Nyitting time the land was flat and there was no KFC or Happy meals. The land slept deeply, waiting for the alarm to go off, waiting to be awakened. This was a different time, this Nyitting time, ‘cause animals ruled and shook the earth alive. So come back, way back to discover the Nyitting time.

Yirra Yaakin’s new family theatre show introduces stories inspired by Traditional Noongar Dreaming based on waterways and native animalsfound in Noongar Country.

Introducing language, culture and the values of conservation through contemporary Aboriginal theatre practice, these stories tackle vanity and greed showing us how happiness is not related to how much we can consume but how we treat others.

How much can you swallow before there are no more djildjit in the sea? Who say’s a Coolbardie sounds better than a Wardong? Katatjin Yirra Yaakin warngkiny weern boodjar koora

We have also created a comprehensive educational package with activities to complement the Curriculum Frameworks for Kindergarten through to year 7.

Can be performed anywhere with a power supply.
